“Alex Cross” was deemed iffy for kids 14 and younger by Common Sense Media, a nonprofit organization that rates movies for age appropriateness.

“We definitely would not think that that was an appropriate movie for a captive audience at 30,000 feet,” said Colby Zintl, a spokeswoman for the group.

at least that's what im taking from this article. we all know how you cant pick your in flight movie, and I think we all know why that is. because, you know, selection means lost profits!

*shudders* the tragedy here is that some planes in operation still have the communal screen that is small and positioned 400' away with seats in the way. This is how our great grandparents watched movies and it is with such sadness I read that they still exist. united really must suck.

Agreed but this must be a really old aircraft we are talking about because I can't remember exactly the last time I got on a plane like that. Probably 15ish years ago since I've seen the community screen.

What pirates?

One day US based carriers will join the real world, then again maybe not. US carriers service has sucked for many years now.

my point was, the movie industry is so paranoid of pirating they feel they must control their content 110%. this story is the direct result of that. ludicrous.

I last united sometime last year and they have the new entertainment systems where you can pick your own movies, music, games, etc on the backs of the seats. It was for a cross country flight so i suspect it's only on their larger planes (747, 777, etc)

I see no evidence of that, in this article.

If I were going to guess, I'd say that the airline doesn't want to pay for the technology that would allow you to pick your own movie, including headphones so that others don't have to listen to your choice.

i was on one of their 737s last year that had a bunch of entertainment options in the seat, but wanted $10 to use it for the whole flight. which sucked.

i was on a 757 from ORD to IAH that let you listen in to cockpit radio traffic, which was all sorts of awesome.

"new" entertainment systems :p

Air Canada has had that for as long as I can remember. It's 100% free too. You can buy headphones for a few dollars, or you can bring your own and plug them in for free (iPod phones work just fine).

I dunno... put a $150 tablet in every headrest, and one Netflix subscription :) how much can it really cost them?

There were headphones when my family and I flew United a few years ago. They aired Shrek 3. I listened to classical and slept instead.

EDIT: Or maybe it was Delta. :hmm: Pretty sure it was United, though.

They just don't make money and it is big $$$ to put video screens behind every seat if the plane did not come that way from the factory.

What does your lack of sex have to do with anything? :p

When I flew EWR to ORL this winter on United, both flights had personal entertainment systems. Probably just based on the age of the aircraft.

"Houston we have a problem"

"Roger. What is the problem? "

"Someone wants to turn off their movie"

"Abort the mission! Repeat, ABORT THE MISSION!!!"

This is dumb. If you don't want your kid to watch/listen to the movie, then don't fucking let them. Don't ruin everyone else's day expecting the world to do your parenting for you.

Fuck parents these days. Jesus.
