this really belongs in the thread at http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2442560

but i can't seem to access the 2nd page of that thread - not sure why but

was watching a series about "cybercrimes" on netflix and one of the episodes, at http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2442560 is talking about music piracy and used the saga about The Pirate Bay in Sweden. Interesting little detail came up, that in 2005 Sony BMG had installed a rootkit on all of it's CDs that would install on your computer and whenever you played one of their CDs, it would "call back to the mothership". It was an attempt at anti-piracy, but the interesting part, when it was discovered, Sony's defense to the media was "if people don't even know what a rootkit is, why should they be worried about it?". I guess cause i don't know about some obscure form of cancer, i should be concerned.

But that tidbit about sony reminded me, i was involved in a copyright lawsuit (i was the defendant) and during the 2 year course of the suit, my IP attorney mentioned that he'd seen some of the material from a RIAA suit against someone one, and he couldn't believe the identifying data they were able to pull of pirated CDs that maybe someone had made to give to a buddy, ie everything, when they originally downloaded it, who it was burning the CD etc

so the point is, a word to the wise - you might make a copy of a movie or music CD - i'd be real concerned about distributing any copies

just my 02
