Movie Hopping Ethics

XZeroII

Lifer
What do you think? Ethical or not? I think it is becuse my ticket enables me to enter the theatre. Once there I can do whatever I want until they throw me out. I've spent 11 hours in one once seeing almost every movie in the theatre. If you can get free refills on popcorn and soda, that makes it even better yet.

<< Not. You paid to see a movie, not to enter a movie theater. >>

what he said. you do realize that is illegal right? it isn't only about ethics. i did it once when i was 14 or so, but not anymore.

You technically paid for the seat to view a movie. Once that movie is over, then your rental of that seat is up you need to pay for the use of another seat rental.

Realistically, if it's a slow ass Tuesday or something and the theatres are empty then aren't loosing any money on you, ethically speaking though, you are punkass.

i think it's not as bad as some of you are making it out to be. with today's inflated prices for movie tickets, i feel i am justified to get atleast 2 or 3 movies in for my $8 i spend! our local theater charges $9.50 for any matinee movie!! ridiculous!!

You asked the theater about that? I'm sure they would have different opinion.

And your ticket has a movie on there, correct? I'm sure it's assumed in the eyes of the law that your ticket is a contract exectuted whereby you get admission to said movie printed on the ticket in exchange for the money you gave them.

But, then again, maybe it's not illegal. I mean, theaters are not legally responsible for keeping kids out of R rated movies. If the theater doesn't care and allows kids in these movies, they aren't breaking any laws. So, maybe you wouldn't be breaking any laws here.

Anyway, I don't have a problem with it personally...I've done it before, when I was younger.

And I feel I should get a GeForce 4 card for $10. I mean, can you believe they charge $400?

hmmm, you people seem to be missing the humor I added into this. Yes I KNOW how it is supposed to work, but I'm trying to twist the situation in order to get a debate going, not just people who call me names. Eh, I guess if you want to you can call me names, but I'm just trying to get a debate going.

Thing is, it's just a different outfit for the same old ethics v. law debate, which always results in name calling and bizarre moral relativism and circular reasoning....

i'm serious when i say that movie hopping never even crossed my mind...until today

i'm sitting here and my officemate at work told me that he saw 3 movies this week.

i was like "wow"...and then realized that he only PAID for 1.

see, he's 46 years old...it's just....wrong!

I couldn't sit through more than one movie at a time, however I don't think its a problem if you catch a second movie, it doesn't cost the theater anything, and if you paid for a ticket along with food, then they've made enough profit off you for that day. 11 hours straight though? That's just lame.

What is there to debate? You are stealing plain and simple. The fact that it is easy and (in all likelihood) without consequence doesn't change anything. It is the same thing with people who think that since Sam Goody charges $17 for a CD, they have a god given right to download songs from the internet.

If you don't have any qualms about doing it, then go for it - I guess.

It's amazing what people will believe to justify theft.

1. You don't HAVE to see the movie. If it's too much, don't go.

2. Next time you have something for sale, let us know. We'll come over and steal it using the justification that you're charging too much.

3. Movie theatres make no profit from ticket sales. All profits are made in the concessions. Next time you feel the need to whine about ticket prices, bitch about the cheap ass people who bring their own food and sodas into the theatre. They are the main reason theatres raise their ticket prices.

Actors getting 25 million a pop for being in a movie doesn't help ticket prices much either.

bwhahaha...

my friends and i do all of the following:

bring our own food and drinks
only see matinee shows
movie hop

guess i'm going to hell 😀

If you don't like it, DON'T WATCH IT.

Why do people feel ENTITLED to everything???

Hehe, I'm just kidding about the fat slob part. I was just trying to be funny. But still, it's wrong to movie hop and I just can't imagine anyone staying and watching movies for 11 straight hours. You get there at 11 am and leave at 10 pm?

Good grief, my ass was hurting after 3 hours of LOTR.

Calm down. I managed a movie theatre 2 years. I know how these things work.

As for me, I'll wait till the movies come off new release at the local video store and nab them @ 3 for $3.00 for three nights.

And there's nothing unethical or immoral with that.

And no, I'm not going to "calm down" nor will I ever accept or condone theft.

Bunker's right. If you pay to see a movie, why would you not pay to see another? You're not paying for a ticket into the theater... you're paying for a ticket to see the movie. If you see another movie, you owe the theater another ticket. What the hell is wrong with people!?

Amused, I wasn't condoning theft. My comment about the actors salary was to just point out that forgone concession sales are not the only reason movie prices cost what they do.

Theatres do not pay a flat fee for their movie usage. They pay a widely varied price based upon Movie studios itself, age of the release, and actual production costs per movie. What it costs to make a movie is passed on to the theatres and ultimately the consumer.

Also, increasingly expensive technical demands from movie studios also hurt ticket prices as well. Some studios will not allow you to play certain movies(at least for the first month or two of it's release) unless your theatre meets very strict technical standards. You have to have special equipment and seating conditions that can cost upwards of 100's of thousands of dollars.

And things are only getting more expensive. Wait till you see what Boing has planned to implement on a widescale basis. That's NOT going to be cheap.

"Hi! I'd like a ticket to <insert movie name here> at 3:00 please."

This is an implied contract. Next time you go to the theater try this:

"Hi! I'd like a ticket to the theater please."

If they give you one, then you are all set. Just bring some extra ass padding. 11 hours would cripple me.
