movie file types and how to tell how they are encoded

Lets say you have a movie type of .avi and a divx player wont play it, angelpotion codec wont play it, windows media player wont play it, etc.

Is there an app that can analyze the file and tell you what codec encoded it and what it will take to watch the file?

It Gspot was confused it's possible you got a truncated file. DivFix can rewrite the index and make what you have viewable possibly. Too late now I suppose.
