No agent needed to be a extra. Here in Wilmingotn nc we have a studio, they did Dawsons creek and some moves, you just go to the lot and give them a pic and sign up. To have speaking parts you need a agent.

Not to be a extra as far as I know. At least at the local studio. Of course that is to be a extra with no spekaing.

In LA, you don't need to be a SAG member to be an extra, but you get craploads of benefits and better pay if you are.

If you go through an agency, you get scheduled and paid through them as well. However, the vast majority of extra placement agencies are really poorly run and very lax with their payments and not very aggressive with their placement, so you have a lot of harassing to do on your part.

Your other choice is to go through one of those ads in the paper and sign up directly, but your pay is generally a pittance, you get crappy food, treated like cattle, and there's a good chance you won't even end up in the final cut.

Certainly don't pay them a penny. You're doing them a favor and and you might get 1 second of screen time if your face doesn't end up on the cutting room floor.

Ranges from $0 to $50 for a "mass crowd extra" and from $90 to $500 for an extra in a small crowd / bystander / filler role, or if you are in a position to get specific instructions (my ex was an extra in Spider-Man, dodging falling rocks from the building, also an extra in some chick flick that came out last year).

They're filming The Punisher here in Tampa right now. They had a mass casting call for extras at the Florida Aquarium a few Saturdays ago. Over 10,000 people showed up and waited in line all day. So besides waiting in line all day, the biggest thing they said was that you're going to be "on set" for about 12 hours each day they need you to be filmed.

Pay is pretty much what amnesiac said. The big thing is that you get to say you were in <insert name> movie.
