Movie DVD's won't play in my laptop.

I'm having an odd problem, I've had two movie dvds not play on my laptop. It won't even see that a disc is in the drive. I'm sure the disc are fine because they both work in my dvd player and desktop computer. I used Nero Infotool to see which formats my laptops dvd drive will play and it says it will read CD-R/RW DVD-RAM/ROM DVD-R/RW and BD-ROM. My drive reads DVD+R without a problem but yet Nero says the format is not supported by my drive.

I have a Toshiba Satellite M40 with a MATSHITA UJDA750 DVD/CDRW drive.

-Thank you.

Are these original DVDs or copies? And what software are you using to play them with? If they are copies, sometimes certain drives do not play certain media brands.

Sorry I should have included more detail from the begining.

They are original DVD's, I'm using a Toshiba M40 Satellite laptop with a Matshita UJDA750 drive. The computer won't see them in the first place(meaning in my computer they never realize a dvd is in the drive) I hear the drive try to spin up but it doesn't load the disc, My computer also has a button on it that allows me to play movies without booting into windows and that won't work either. My drive plays CD's fine, I'm going to try non movie dvd's and see if they work.

I just tried a BF2 DVD and it didn't work the first time but the second time it worked.

Is it a new laptop, or an old one. If it's old did it play DVDs fine before? If it's new, what program do you use to play DVDs?

OK - a laptop DVD drive has two separate lasers - one for CDs and the other for DVDs. If the DVD one goes out, the other may still work. Your symptoms sound like this is the case.

If so, then the fix is to replace the drive. Or . . . the DVD laser lens may be dirty. Try a DVD cleaner.

i got the same problem aswell the dvd's i make wether they are data or movies will only play on my pioneer dvd drive and on the t.v. ive tried three different other types of dvd drives on friends comps. they cant read the raw format that nero or my drive put them in i think its either nero or the drive. i dont know if this raw format is new but if it is then its a lame format because like i said ive tried five different drive and only my pioneer will read the disks so the T.B. of backup files i have can only be read by a few dvd drives

I'm having a similar problem except that it's only one DVD that will not play. I just purchased Alien vs Predator. It plays in my dvd player but just like you my laptop (toshiba satellite 5105) won't even recognize there's a disk in the drive. It's really strange. It can't be the dvd laser because every other dvd I've tried has worked. and the region code is correct.

What player are you using? Try PowerDVD 7 or at least WMP 11.

Sorry guys, I didn't realize this thread was still active.

I fixed my problem with a few sprays from a can of compressed air, I sprayed the drive out and then the lens and that fixed it. Using a cleaning disc didn't work but then again that disc only had 1 brush embedded in it.
