What is a*Movie DVD*??????
If you want to rip a divd you need to have dvd-drive
some dvd-ripping software and a blank dvd.
Here's the Howto's
If you just want ot copy the dvd use software like DVD Shrink and others.:)
*edit* single layer dvd media is ok.:)

you don't need dual layer media, just use DVD Shrink and Nero. Google DVD Shrink, it's free.

I have a nice system set up that has treated me well, and I havent messed up anything

get dvds....(rent, borrow, or um, Own rather)
use DVD shrink to make an image .iso file (it will compress it if need be, it makes the iso the size of a 4.7 gig DVD)
Use nero or some other program to burn the image
Profit...so to speak

I am cheap and buy $20 spindles of 100 DVDs from newegg... ends up taking about 13 min to burn at 4x. but I love my collection :)

What kind of degradation we talking? Noticable? Unwatchable?

I honestly dont notice anything.... but you guys and your high attention to detail MIGHT be able to notice. most dvds dont have to be shrank that much anyways

but seriously, if you want to make a big collection... Im not saying you should or anything, but getting a service like netflix or something really can pay for itself over time...

when i use dvd shrink, i cut out all the extras and use slight compression on the movie. it is pretty much unnoticeable

oh yeah, you can take out the directors commentary audio streams, as well as the french and spanish dubbing if available... which leaves more room for video files, which means less compression

It seems like just the extra sound and language options alone would chop a big chunk of size off.

DVDShrink and Nero is what I use most of the time. DVDDecrypter is another useless app.

i rather own my dvd's than burn them.. same reason why i hate ppl who download movies off the web to watch them.

depends. that 500mb might be dts sound:p or commentary, or whatever. some films are simply more compressed then others in the first place. many are 6gb alone.
