Movie appeared grainy in LCD

Hi guys!
I am trying out this monitor: Princeton 19". Not the best monitor out there, but they got it in costco so I can try it out without the time hassle (if you know what I mean)

I am using its DVI input, everything looks sharp in desktop, and games are fine (ghosting are minimal) but when I watched DVD, the movie appeared grainy, plus the grayscale range seems to be very limited. At a dark night scene, it appeared too dark as if the monitor only has 3 tone of grayscale.

Does this happen to every LCD when watching movies? Or there's something you can tweak to get the best out of this?

DVD movies have a low resolution compared to a standard desktop resolution, so they're going to be grainy no matter what monitor you watch them on. When I watch movies on my CRT they're grainy too.

depends on the LCD. Some do 12bit color, some do 16bit... So, yeah, you'll notice flaws more...

How do you check if the LCD has 12 bit or 16 bit color? Isn't this supposed to be a standard?

I checked the spec. It's 16 million colors (is this what you are talking about?) 16 million seems standard to me...

Anyway, I watched the same movie again on my CRT, it's much less grainy and has better color range.

dvds always look grainy on a computer whether it's crt or lcd. if you want it to look good watch it on a tv.

depends on the player. some software players are better then others. windvd powerdvd are great. that being said, what do you mean by grainy? pixels? or fine film grain. film grain is just what the film adds to the picture. sometimes its more apparent. some lcds are better able to display colors then others. some have trouble with dim colors.. poor contrast etc. and some of the earlier 16ms lcds sacrificed color for speed. if you see pixels, your software player + vid driver... somethings wrong. dvd is 740x480, good enough for a very nice picture at 19".

and its good to see grain if its film grain. shows that your display doesn't blur out details.

I agree that software makes a huge difference as well

I like watching dvd's on my crt much better than my 36 inch ty as they are crisper and cleaner

Not since the nvidia mx200/400 cards have I seen a grainy dvd on my crt.

I live power dvd xp on ati's 9700 pro card.
