YEAH more 527s

I watched their ads on their website, and to be honest, I could have made a better Ad on my computer with Windows Movie Maker.

MoveOnForAmerica.org

New soft-money group to launch anti-Kerry ads

"MoveOnForAmerica.org was created due to the Bush campaign's largely timid attack ads against Mr. Kerry," its site says.

Created by Republican political consultant Stephen Marks, it is the latest in a spate of "527s," independent soft-money groups that have sprung up on both sides of the aisle to influence voters.

Marks also worked for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee and the Republican Governors Association, and served as a press secretary to President Bush's brother, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, in his unsuccessful 1994 campaign.

He said his group has already raised $200,000 and aims to surpass $1 million by the election.

"We'll hopefully be successful like the Swift boat people," Marks said, referring to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, a 527 organization whose ads have questioned Kerry's service in Vietnam.

Someone with some skills should take one of them and add this near the end:

"Yes, Kerry is bad for the nation, but there is some good news. I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico." :D

Damn those adds have some weak ass themes. Attacking Kerry for doing his job as a defense lawyer? Attacking Kerry for knowing Al Sharpton? What a bunch of morons.

Attack ads can be very effective.

The only time they are not is when the candidate who puts them up is seen to be hitting below the belt.

If the candidate can plausibly deny responsability, then much of the backlash can be diffused. Thus, even if a 3rd party crosses the line, their candidate will not catch the majority of the flack.

Your 527 laws are whacked.

Agreed. There is enough political mudslinging by the candidates themselves - why do we need others to do it for them?

the first video was of marginal importance or interest...

the Sharpton video is much more damning...

Sharpton is a con artist and a hate monger, Kerry's literal embrace of Sharpton is political dynamite.

It's still free speech (at least until the the FEC gets done with its latest round of rule-making). We may not like it, but we should oppose the FEC's efforts to squash these 527 groups. Unless their ads are factually incorrect, these groups have a constitutional right to be heard.

More like damn Al Sharpton and his Tawana Brawley scam. But Al was lying about sex, so it's OK. And if an innocent man's reputation was ruined, well, you've got to break a few eggs to make an omelet! Anyway, Al's a great guy - ask any Korean grocer in New York. As John Kerry said, Sharpton's the "moral compass" of the Democratic Party. Heaven help us all if he meant that.

:Q OUCH!!! Those are going to leave a mark.

CsG

Probably, since reporters seem incapable or unwilling to do any type of research.

George Reissfelder

"He served seven years of a life term in Walpole state prison before he was
granted a one-day furlough, and then failed to return to the prison. Three
years later, a Florida police officer was trying to arrest him for writing
a bad check when Reissfelder pulled a gun and it went off.

No one was injured, but Reissfelder pleaded guilty to a charge of
attempted murder because he was already facing a life term in
Massachusetts and he had been told the sentences would run concurrently,
according to Kerry.

Sragow said yesterday that she and Kerry took the case in December 1980.
They could do nothing, she said, until they found a priest, an FBI agent,
a probation officer and five police officers
who agreed to testify in
behalf of their client."

Convicted 1967, furloughed and escaped 1974, plead guilty to attempted murder 1977, 1982 Sragow and Kerry get Reissfelder's conviction for murder overturned, 1991 Reissfelder dies of a drug overdose.

Reissfelder was a career criminal, without a doubt. By the way the Governor at the time of the furlough was Francis Sargent a Liberal Republican.

New Yorker article.

This MoveOnAmerica.whatever is just more BS from the right.
