There is a serious discussion underway among some university scientists to ditch the Internet as we know it and redesign it using modern technology.

http://kutv.com/national/local_story_103134443.html

"The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969."

I think this would be great. :)

Even if it was feasible, it would be a terrible thing, because you just know it would be locked down with all sorts of restrictions. It would have all sorts of tools to be used by content providers to further destroy fair use rights, and it would certainly remove any kind of anonymity on the internet.

Nice idea, but I don't think anyone will be ditching the internet anytime soon. I think it's funny that scientists think they have any chance of "ditching" something that is making so much money for so many people. Like any one group has that power.

And corporations will get involved, then we'll have standards wars over Internet-2.0 and Internet+2.0, or Blu-Internet and HD-Internet.
If you want to get onto the Blu-Internet, you'll have to buy genuine Sony routers, and only visit Sony-approved sites.

But soon the PornoWeb version X.XX standard would take over, with an emphasis on privacy and security.

We should start by creating a law that allows us to put spammers in jail faster and with a stronger punishment. I hate spammers to hell, and if I could, I would beat their servers down office space style.

Rebuild the internet from scratch? This has got to be a joke. It doesn't even sound good in principle.

Yep, if they do it say goodbye to many many many things you may or may not do or even be aware of that you can do.

At least I will again be able to tell my grandkids the amazing stories of a world before the orwellian nightmare of the new internet.

This is exactly what would end up happening. Along with good monitoring of everything everyone does so the RIAA, MPAA, and the Feds can more easily keep and eye on you.
