Movement of files

OKay you all this one is strange. My brother in law is trying to move mp3 files from his mp3 playere to his computer. But each time he tries, the file goes to his c drive and addition space is removed from the drive. It is only a 6 gig so it disappears fast. He has checked the files on the c drive and there are empty folders indicating there are items in the folders but there is nothing there. Properties says that he has used all but 250 mb of space but when you add it all up he has used 2.1 gig only. He deleted the empty folders and gained a small amount of space. He ran diskeeper and gained a little more space but when he did his reboot that space disappeared again. I told him to format and start over of which he did but when he tried to transfer the mp3 again the same thing happened.
Question is what can cause this to happen other than a hacker messing with him?
