I know you can use third-party cable modems like from D-Link, Linksys, Motorola, etc. Just to check here, if I order a Linksys cable modem online will I have any trouble hooking it up to Timewarner Road Runner in Raleigh, NC? Just don't want to screw myself and be out of internet longer than necessary :(

Welcome to Raleigh! :)

I'm pretty sure you are allowed to use your own modem. We debated just buying our own, but it would take like 3 years for the rental fee to exceed the cost of the new modem. So we decided to keep it since there would probably be a new version in a couple of years. They let you upgrade for free.

Not sure about Raleigh, but in NYC the price for RoadRunner service was the same with or without the modem. I initially bought a Motorola but returned it and used the provided RCA.

Thanks :) Lived here for the past 3 years, but moved to a condo from NCSU campus ;)

So would you guys just recommend getting the RR modem? The point about it paying for itself is a good one....

here in charlotte RR is the same price with or without a modem, so you might as well save your $$$ and use theirs

That's what I'm thinking. Anyone know what the deal is with "free installation" ? Right now we don't have an extra cable jack anywhere and would like not to hook a splitter up. The previous owners I think hooked a splitter up in the wall and put in two wall plates, but it was seriously f-ing our cable signal. Will the "free installation" properly install another wall jack or will they just split the sh!t?

They should install another jack...when we had it installed at our last house, the technician actually ran a new line from the box.

I'd just take the one that comes with it. Especiallyy if it's no cheaper. Around here we just got the $35/mo for 12 months but they always have different deals going on.

I saw that, I was hoping to find a $19.99 for 6 months; BBY sometimes runs those. I know BBY also used to do this thing where they would send you a mail-in rebate for the first 3 or 6 months of your high speed service if you "sign up" in store. Might do that....
