This is a home-built rig. I am thinking it's the PSU but want to be sure. I am not even getting the red idle light when I plug it in but i get a weird whining sound when I unplug it. I don't have a spare PSU to test with. Thoughts?

Sorry for the fragmented post, I am pecking this in on a PS3.

Moved the PC? Moved to a new house? Tried different power outlets? Double check to make sure nothing came unplugged? What your current psu?

it's the PSU, good mentioning of the sounds it makes and the fact that it will not even light up the power light on the mobo.
I gatehr you made sure all motherboard power connections are snug and secure.

Moved to a new apartment. I opened up the case and checked all connections and it was all good. No burning smell either :) Time to hit up the parts store I guess.

Currently have a Thermaltake TR2 W0070RUC 430W ATX PSU.

For parts I have an ASROCK 939 dual SATA ULi M1695 mobo with an AMD 4200 Manchester 939 processor. 2 gigs of Corsair DDR RAM and a 350 gig Seagate Barracuda drive. One DVD RAM and one DVD ROM drive(I may remove these because I never use them) . My video card is a Sapphire 256MB Radeon 9600 and I'm going to be throwing in a wireless ethernet adapter. I use onboard sound and I have a flash reader on the front of my case. Can I get away with something smaller than 430W?

Hum...I guess it's also a good time to get a good surge protector as well.

The whining sound you described definitely sounds like a failed component in the power supply.

As listed, those components (including the two DVD drives) have a max power draw of about 230 watts. Each cooling fan takes 4-8 watts as well (you didn't mention how many you have), but even with a half dozen large fans you're still well within the capabilities of a high quality 300 watt power supply. Since you specifically asked about using something smaller than 430 watts, a good quality power supply in the 400 watt range will keep your computer happy even if you have plans to upgrade that video card any time in the near future.

Agreed. 430 watt is actually kinda overkill.

But before you buy another PSU, try another outlet in another room, the one where your PS3 currently sits is a good bet. It might very well be a wiring problem, in which case that needs to be taken care of.

Well, I tried the computer with four different outlets, two on different circuits at my old place and two on the same circuit here.

I've got two cooling fans and the CPU fan for a total of three. I am not planning on upgrading at all as I would like to buy a laptop in a year or two and it would just be a waste. I think I am going to pull the ROM drive and opt for a 300 or 350 watt PSU as sometimes I plug in an external laptop drive , USB key or tablet. Thanks for your help, everyone.
