Move Windows XP Mode.vmcx from Win7 to Mac VMWare Fusion??

Is it possible to move a virtual WinXP installation from Win7 to my mac? I installed this on my Windows 7 back before WinXP went dark to run a couple applications that won't run on Win7 or above.

This virtual installation isn't like a VMWare virtual where everything is in one file. The file called Windows XP Mode.vmcx is only 2KB. So there has to be other files somewhere, I don't understand how that works.

I have VMWare Player installed on my Win7 machine, but it doesn't recognize the Microsoft Virtual XP install.

It would be nice to run this virtual on my Mac under VMWare fusion.

If that isn't possible, is there a way to move my current virtual machine from Win7 into a fresh install of Win10?

thanks,

Kirk

If it's XP mode it needs virtualPC which doesn't run on anything newer than windows 7,it might run on vmware but it will probably have issues with drivers.
Right click on the Windows XP Mode.vmcx file and use open with and choose notepad it should be simple text and it should tell you where the virtual disk file is stored.

Apparently this can be done relatively easily with the Windows version of VMWare Workstation. Grab the trial of that and install in on your Windows 7 machine, and see if that does the trick.

https://pubs.vmware.com/workstation-9/index.jsp?topic=/com.vmware.ws.using.doc/GUID-D6E6E770-2D4A-4D8A-B08F-D71EA2D6A8B6.html

https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-W...UID-A419887C-ABCB-4923-B9BA-773302E858F5.html

I have yet to try this. Downloading the VMWare Workstation now. I fear that this may not work. I found this tech document:
https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2014936

In that document, it says:

There are limitations to using XP Mode in Workstation:
  • The XP mode virtual machine can only be run on a host that supports XP Mode natively.
  • Only one XP Mode virtual machine can run on the host at a time.
If only Win7 Supports XP Mode natively, and I want to move this to a new Win10 machine or my mac VMWare Fusion, looks like I am out of luck. Unless I am miss-understanding that tech document.

I downloaded the Workstation and it wont import. I followed the directions, but get a message that says: "Failed to import Windows XP Mode". Looks like this might be a dead end.

I did come across a page that explains how to get this virtual machine working on Win10 though. Might have to experiment with that.

You can run windows 7 in vmware and run virtualPC with xpmode inside of that, that's how I did it anyway,as long as you don't mind the extra GBs for the win7 installation, which itself could come in handy, there is practically no downside.
(The integration wouldn't work anyway)

That sounds like a bunch of extra overhead. Virtual inside of virtual.

I still have the program files for the one program that I use in XP compatibility mode. I wonder if I could download a WinXP image that would work natively in VMWare Fusion or Player and load that software into it there?

VIRTUCEPTION...
If you have a halfway decent machine that supports hardware virtualization and your virtual disks are on ssd it's not bad at all you can't even tell the difference.

Yes well, there is no legal image you can download so legally the only thing you can do is to clean install windows XP into fusion and then try running the software.

I have the Windows XP disk still. I don't mind installing it and creating a new virtual machine, that is no problem. I was under the impression that after a certain point the activation servers are no longer active and Windows XP can't be activated anymore.

Oops, yeah that could very well be the case.

I have one old computer in my office that still running XP 64. With VMware workstation it looks like I could turn a physical working OS installation into a virtual one. I might give that a try.
