Move to Athlon 64 not right move.

A few months back I made the move to Athlon 64. I made the move based almost entirely on benchmarks but also from user comments.

However I have come to realise that it wasn't right for me. Having moved from a Hyperthreaded P4 to a Athlon 64 4000 I have found that my system seems to be a lot slower than before.

So I closed my eyes took a step back and looked at what I was actually using my PC for and came to the startling conclusion that I was a closet multitasker.

I do enjoy gaming, perhaps not as much as some people I know, but have realised that those extra few frames per second really do not matter. What I crave is endless switching between applications, the notable ones being firefox, outlook, access, photoshop.

So I've come to the conclusion that I really do need a Dual Processor setup or at the very least a hyperthreaded one.

Just my views.

quoted for truth

on my old p4 i used to encode, browse and watch a dvd at the same time.... now if the dvd is not in the foreground, it skips

gaming is definitley faster though
if your system is s939, look to upgrade the cpu to the x2 series when they come out... i know i will be waiting patiently 🙂

Fortunately it is 939, but dual core seems to be so far away at the moment, I am very impatient when it comes to technology.

Problem is I am getting itchy fingers at the moment.

Switching between open applications by itself is not "multitasking". Having multiple cores / multiple CPUs will make your computer more responsive though.

AMD is gonna crucify themselves by waiting so long to bring out their X2 desktop chips when you know they have the capability to bring them out now.

They've already released them in a market where dual cores will matter far more, the server market.
Also, server chips having a far higher ASP is a nice added bonus.

Makes perfect sense to me.

Unfortunately, AMD doesn't have to resources that Intel does to shove things on the market. Like a recent Anandtech article explained, putting X2 desktop chips on the market now would create much more demand than they can supply.

Hmm, if switching between tasks is your problem, perhaps more memory is in order.

Yeah, how much memory do you have? The programs you list don't seem that intense. Do you have all your drivers updated?

OP, your processor should be plenty fast for anything you can throw at it. I'd suggest getting another 512mb of ram.

Every driver is bang up to date, condition of the system is good, regular defragging etc, no spyware or other present.

I have 1024MB RAM which should be more than enough.

My main gripe is that although the system is fast, it doesn't feel as responsive as my old P4 setup. The only time it feels quicker is when I am playing games and the graphics card probably has more to do with this than anything else.

When I say swithching apps it is usually because one app is doing something so I go and do something else. Also I make a great deal of use of Napster as well for music.

Check your memory useage. 1gb can easily be surpassed when using Photoshop, I've done it numerous times myself and I'm a light Photoshop User..

I had the same experience going from a 3.4 P4HT to a 3500+. I didn't want to wait for dual core (the wait would've ended up being about a year from when I bought my system in Dec 04). So know I'm back with the P4HT and it's great.
