HI
Not sure where to post this so i'll start here.
How,,, or what do you use to move files from one pc to another?
Example. Buy a new pc then transfer programs from older pc to the new one.
Or,,, do a clean install. How do you save the old files then re-install them to the clean install?
Or,,, say,,, replace the hard drive with a new drive.
Do you use a program to move the files? If I remember right you can buy a transfer cable.
I am planning to update 2 to 4 pc's during the next few months and need any and all suggestions on getting the files from one pc to another.

1. If you want to transfer your installed applications from a PC to another, this is not possible (for most applications), you have to re-install them on any new PC or after a Windows re-install.

2. If you want to transfer your files from an old PC to a new one, an external hard drive should be a good choice.

The answer really depend on the computer. Are we going from pre-built to prebuilt? Custom to custom?

And on the custom side, are we talking about an entirely new machine? or maybe moving a hard drive to a new buid?

There is no one answer. If you want to ask one specific question, I can tell you what I would do.

Ok
First machine is a Dell laptop.
Bought as refurbished from Dell in late 2009.
Win XP was installed.
Dell sent free upgrade to Win 7 that I installed.
System is a dual core intel cpu with 8 gig ram and 250 gig hard drive.
With the push to go to win 10,,,, I downloaded the win 10 iso to a usb flash drive.

Would like to do a clean install to a ssd and trying to keep as much of the original software as I can from the old drive.
I use Quicken 2009,,, old version of ms office. Also old version of Acronis true image vlc media plsyer. Also other software such as Insider to check wifi, etc.

If you have an old version of Acronis, I highly doubt that it will work with a new Win10 64-bit installation. Generally it has some low-level hooks that are OS-specific.

Quicken 2009 may or may not work. (Hopefully it does.)

You'll have to re-install your applications after the clean install though.

New computer? It probably comes with Windows 10. New programs will need to be test-installed to see what you have to buy new. Quicken and Office roll over pretty well, so you shouldn't have much more to do than install the programs and transfer the data files though a USB stick. Or if you have a home network set up, file transfer will work just as well.

Hi
Thanks for the info.
I have a few thoughts on what to do.
One is to remove the old drive from the laptop and install a new ssd then install win 10 using the iso on the usb flash drive. After that install older software. If the old software works, Great. If not,,, buy new versions of the software and install and go from there.
Thanks for the help.
