Move Dell components into other case?

I am starting to get very concerned about my Dimension 8400 getting hot, doesn't seem to be much in the way of airflow. The whole Intel processor is all new to me...usually an AMD guy, but I got a good deal. Anyway...would it void my warantee(?) if I put mobo, dvd, & HDD etc. into a different case with more fans? Has anyone else done this? Just curious.
 
It would definately void your warrantee. I dont' think you can do it either, the mobo is attached to the case I believe.

Just remember, Dell wouldnt' make their computers run hot enough that they will overheat. They might run them on the brink of overheating, but they will not overheat.
 
it probably would void warranty but ur warranty is probably already dont also you can move it i moved mine just to do it 🙂 i had a problem though 🙁 the case has to lean on side because there is no spot to screw in yes i know u can drill but i dont want screw up my case for mobo.
 
I believe you can do it. Dell use to use proprietary psu's though so look out for that. I had a D8100, so they've probably updated them by now. Why don't you just mod the case and put a 120 mm blowhole fan on it. That would cool things down noticeably.
 
a kid at a lan party modded his 8400 with a side window and a 120mm fan. Kept things rather nicely cool. Did a good job too.

as for moving, I guess its possible, but you have to bring your PSU with you.
 
Putting your Dell parts in another case? That's like scooping poop out of the toilet and putting it in your sockdrawer.

 
The 8400 uses a standard BTX PSU.

You cannot mount a Dell motherboard into an aftermarket case without major mods. First, the motherboard is not standard ATX and uses a one hole mounting system. Secondly, the I/O shield won't line up. Lastly, Dell uses a ribbon type connector for the power, reset, and USB. Normal cases use seperate wires. You would have to figure all of this out yourself.
 
yeah like daddyjax said, Dells mobos don' t match up with normal cases. The dell mobos i've seen uses hooks and maybe 1 or 2 screws to hold down the motherboard. Pretty much anything you do to the dell will void its warranty. Best thing you could do is put better fans or cut more fan holes
 
Okay, I put a 120mm fan in the side. Made it a little louder, but I'm not as concerned as I was about the heat factor. Thanks to all.

Dell voided my extended warranty when I tried to use it to get the power plug fixed. The plug is not loose but apparently doesn't make a good connection with the case as it won't charge the battery unless it is turned perfectly and doesn't move.

Thus, the problem was hardware related.

Why did Dell void my warranty? Because the system was purchased installed with Windows 95 and I had the audacity to install Windows 98. The real sin was that I paid about 1/4 the price for the retail stores version of Windows 98 that Dell wanted to charge me.

So yes, if you sneezed since purchasing the Dell system while in the same country as your computer you probably voided the warranty.

BTW, Dell still has great phone service.

this is why the period (.) was invented?
i think dell would build there cases so they would not overhet, but the hotter things are the shorter they last.
