move computer from bedroom to living room, DSL speed dropped by half.

I used to have my old comp in my room and the dsl line would run thru a long extention to get to the modem, at least 50-75 feet i'd say. I used to have a download speed of around 1200-1300 mbit and around 200 or so upload. SBC advertise the speed of up to 1500/256. After putting together my new system (see sig) and installing winxp with sp2, i put the computer outside in the living room. The phone line going to the modem comes from the same outlet as it was before, but I just tried the speedtest on broadbandreports.com and my download speed is cut in half, to around 580-600 mbits. the upload speed stayed roughly the same. anybody know the cause and possibly the fix?

i thought maybe its the sygate firewall. i disabled it, ran the speed test again and it got me the same numbers.

If you're using different cords, it could be they're more suceptible to noise and causing the slowdown (just a guess).

It could be a number of things.
1) Does the phone cord now run alongside any other wires? Especially - does it run near a power adapter (ie. those boxy things you plug in for a lot of electronics)? They emit a lot of interference
2) You implied that you upgraded/built anew your system and installed sp2 at the same time as you moved it to another room - is this the case? It may well be sp2, a friend of mine experienced speed drops with his DSL line when upgrading to sp2, unfortunately he's a technophobe and 500 miles away from me, so I can't feasibly go have a firsthand look.
3) It may simply be your ISP. Give it a day or two, re-check speeds.

Depending on which speedtest you used, and the time of the day, on BBR it could be crowded. Try downloading a file from Microsoft or anyone else with a fat pipe and record your results.

Try using the registry patches from Speedguide

I bet if you moved the pc back to the other room your speeds would not change.

I also doubt the speed would change if i move the comp. back. I will check the lines tonight when i get home, it currently run along another line that goes to the fax on my desk using the splitter/filter. The lines do run behind the computer and are around the UPS/surge protector. The ethernet cord is the same one from before. its strange that only D/L speed is slowed, the U/L is still the same as before around 200 mbits. I would think the noise effecting the line would slow down both up and download speeds.

dsl reports tweak test

i'm not sure if the above link works, but its the result from the tweak test. I checked the MTU and its 1492. I running out of ideas as to why my d/l speed dropped by half. I tried to run a phone cord directly from the jack to the dsl modem, w/o winding around the surge protector and got the same 600k download from the tests. i still can't figure out why the slow speed. the computer is connected to the same jack in the house that got me 1.3mbit before.

problem solved. turns out the phone in the basement was connected to the wrong plug on the filter. it was on the dsl side instead of the phone side. switched it, tested again and now i'm back to 1.3down/256up. thanks for all the advice.
