Mouse troubles...

I have a question on keeping my buttons assigned in XP Pro... every time I switch users I have to log off and log in again to get my mouse buttons to work (the left and right side buttons on Microsoft Intellimouse Optical) as they are supposed to - they keep functioning as the default back & forward buttons, but don't work as my settings (shift & alt), even though mouse properties say they are set that way.

Is there any way to change that?
