Mouse stopped clicking........

Okay, I just got home and I turn on my comp and boot and see that my mouse needs batteries...I've been holding off a few weeks to do this, so I say remind me in a week. Well, I fire up the internet and notice my(left click) mouse won't click. I believe it's the batteries so I go and change em. I get the same problem, the left button won't click. I dunno what to do. PS it is a MS Intellimouse Explorer 1.0a w/ WinXP...
