Mouse starts FREAKING out in games... What's up!?!?! ;-)

Hey,

I've tried two different mice and three different games:

Quake 3: Arena
Soldier of Fortune
that new Voyager Borg beta demo thing ;)

After I play for a while, sometime my mouse just goes scitzo on me and when I move it, the pointer just goes all over the place (causing the view to flip around and such). I can still use the keyboard so I exit the game, but back in Windows the mouse is still messed up. When you move it, it also randomly clicks, right-clicks, click and drags, etc... I gotta reboot to get this problem to go away. It's rather frusterating. Anyone have any ideas what's up with this? Thanx!

I use a standard MS Mouse w a wheel. It came with a disc of something. I'm not sure - drivers perhaps?

Check to see if your mouse has drivers. If so, reinstall the drivers. If not, than I am wrong.

I used to have that problem back in the days of C&C Red Alert... It was my graphics card that was doing it(some conflict I guess), had to get a new one :(

I know this was a known problem for users of Logitech mouse and using PS/2Rate to increase their mouse resolution. If you're using PS/2Rate, disable it and see if your problem goes away. Logitech comes with it's own utility to increase the resolution in the mouse properties under the control panel. I believe you must be running Mouseware 9 and greater if I'm not mistaken. I hope this solves your problem as problems like these are hard to track down sometimes.

Thanx. I'll try Dazex's idea first cuz I don't think there's any special drivers for this mouse. It's just a generic "HP" two-button mouse. The other mouse I tried was a IntelliMouse or whatever they're called... the optical kind. I like the smaller feel of the HP one though for my games. I think it's made by Logitech though, just stamped by HP. I'll give some things a try.

Sorry for the long reply. I only got one e-mail saying this topic had been updated, not three :(

i believe the HP mice are logitech mice and I have had that problem before and it was because of ps2rate. You need the newest logitech drivers to set the mouse to a high rate.

My friend had a mouse possessed like that once. It would just move around and click n stuff for no reason while playing half-life. He got a new mouse and all is well. Also if its a cordless you have make sure it has new batteries :). If its an optical try it on a different surface, mine goes goofy if I use it on my shiny desk.

I think it was the refresh rate thing. I've tuned it down and installed the Logitech drivers and it hasn't happened since. Hopefully it's fixed (knock on wood).

Xtremist,

It might mean that you are pushing your graphic too far.

Try these steps in Control Panel, Clicks: Display > Settings > Addvance > Performance > lower the Hardware Acceleration a notch or two to fix yer mouse problem.

Good luck!

Don't think it's the vid card. Granted right now I'm using my TNT Viper V550, but it also happened on my Geforce as well as resolution and settings that shouldn't make it break a sweat. Thanx though...

This thread is just what I needed, Im having a very similar problem: Playing the Deus Ex demo, I ran into the random "freaking out" spinning view thing every min or two and my selected weapon will auto fire all the rounds sometimes. I dont have to reboot though, I just have to reselect the weapon. I had not experiencdd any of this in other games but last night after about a hour in SWAT 3, I had the spinning view happen one time. I updated to the mouseware nine and still have the problem (I did used PS2RATE previously)
system:
ABIT KA7 - ATHALON 700 (running at 700 still)
128 meg CAS2
TNT2
PS2mouse man
SB Live Gamer

I think my next step will be to remove PS2rate from my system and clean the regestry and the reinstall the mouseman software. maybe there is some residual stuff going on from the PS2rate???

thanks

Yeah, hopefully that's the problem. It has seemed to fix it for me though, however I never had it as frequently as you seem to have it... Curious how we both have the exact same motherboard CPU, and sound card though... ;) It's a conspiracy! And the same RAM for that matter (mine's Mushkin and there's two of em).

Now if I can just get my Geforce to stop freezing every 3-5 hours, I'll be set! Using my old TNT currently :( Cheers!

Could be, however installing the new Logitech drivers seemed to fix the problem for me... However, I dunno, just seems like another thing the KA7 would screw up :) WISH I got the K7V instead :(

The optical mice are cool, but sometimes they jump around. If your optical mice is jumping around, try different surfaces. Optical mice shouldn't be doing the random clicking though.

Hehe, nooo no. It's not that kind of jumping around. You'd have to see it to really understand it I think...

I've seen it on a Socket 7 Epox motherboard with a logitech first mouse(3 button). Yes I was using PS/2 rate to push it to 200hz.

I've only seen it do it ONCE for no apparent reason.

I can make it happen (maybe 1/5 times) if I move the mouse like crazy on startup JUST AS the PS/2 rate program is starting. If I leave it perfectly still, while everything loads on startup, it seems to be quite happy at 200hz.

What operating system is this under? What's the generic MS OS bundled driver that is being loaded for the mouse? I wonder if we can find another factor in common besides PS/2 rate.
