mouse resetting?

a friend of mine bought a 'advance optical mouse' recently, and I played on his comp and it seemed like (from what I thought i remember reading in these forums) that the mouse was resetting. In games it would start looking up or down and spinning, and in windows it would just stick to a corner. Is this a faulty mouse and should get it replaced, or is it some sort of driver issues?
