Mouse resetting to default in WinXP32

So... here's a new one:

On my laptop (toshiba satellite m105) my mouse settings keep getting reset to default everytime I restart windows.

This is annoying because default settings are very slow on this touchpad, and I have to manually adjust each time I start windows.

Anyone know how to get the settings to "STICK" or what may be happening?

hey i dont know what's causing this problem but i have it too with vista x64, with proper drivers installed. i thought it was something only vista had trouble with, cause vista kept forgeting folder settings also... anyway if anyone has an idea it would help us both

Same problem here aswell latest windows XP Pro SP2
Mouse resets to default when I restart have touchpad software installed Synaptics Touchpad v7.12.2
Very annoying

Yes, Im guessing something is keeping the user profile locked and the system is shutdown without flushing the file (they started doing that at some point to avoid hangs at shutdown). That results in some per user settings not getting saved (and is annoying as heck)

Weird question (to the OP), if you make the change in safemode does it stick?

Yep, I had the same problem on my Toshiba A215... drove me batty!!!

I'm the only guy in the world that figured it out (on my own, through trial n' error), according to Google Search results, or lack there of...

I searched for a fix for months - nada!

In my case, it turned out to be a combination of things:

  1. 1. I have an Alps touch pad, but ^%$! WU thought I had a Synaptics touch pad, and updated my lappy with the wrong drivers*.

    * Incidently, this caused my boot time to double (or more)!

    2. I made the mistake of installing Logitech SetPoint - which is basically a virus that doesn't work right all the time.

I fixed this by disinfecting my machine of Logitech SetPoint - specifically, a SetPoint DLL that 'zeros out' the mouse/touch pad settings every time you reboot - and which lingered on my machine, even after numerous attempts to rid myself of SetPoint remnants. It STILL comes back, every time I do a restore...

And, I installed Dell Alps drivers in my lappy instead of the crappy one Toshiba offers.

If any of this rings a bell, let me know, and I'll walk you through it... 😉

EDIT

BTW, here's a couple of purdy pictures for you (from a while back - lappy forum):

PIC1

PIC2

Not only do the Dell drivers work better than Toshiba's, but they add a LOT of functionality! 😀
