Mouse problems in Linux Debian

I got the thing to work when I was running GNOME & E at the same time. I switched to just GNOME, and the mouse would work for a sec, and stop. So I istalled KDE. Same thing. I stopped GDM, and it worked find. Since I thought that was the problem I removed the line for the /etc/.../gdm, and everything went well. Now it doesn't work again. I checked the /var/log/XFree86.0.log and it says: Generic Device : cannot open input device, PreInit Falied for input device "Generic Device". I tried xf86config, and changed to all the different mice. No help at all. Is there another program to setting up the mouse? I know I went through another before, but I don't remember the name. What is my problem? 😛
