Mouse problem - single clicks registering as 2 or more clicks

There is something strange going on with the "back" button on my mouse. I only use the button while in IE, so that is where I always notice the problem: sometimes a single click of the "back" button will take me back 2 or more web pages. This problem is completely intermittent; I have no way of duplicating it.

Is my mouse broken or is this a glitch within IE? The mouse is an original MS Intellimouse explorer optical that I got in 2001.

The contacts are bouncing meaning the mouse is worn out. Mice have come a long way since 2001 - check out the G7, G5, and MX Revolution from Logitech.

Thanks for the recommendations. I just got an MX518 from Newegg. I chose the MX518 over the G5 because the G5 doesn't have the "forward" button, which I use all the time. That and the reviews said the G5's accuracy wasn't noticeably better than the MX518's, so I'll see how it goes.
