Mouse problem in Windows XP

I've installed windows XP, and since then, I've been having problems with the mouse. It will just DIE under certain circumstances, like switching users. What the hell?

I traced part of the problem back to some touchpad driver ( I don't have a touchpad) that Windows Update thought I needed. Well, I uninstalled that crap and rolled back the driver, but the mouse keeps dying whenever switching to another user, then switching back to my user. Its really starting to p!ss me off, I never ran into anything like this with Win2K. BTW I can't do a "system restore", cause I disabled that from day one.
