Mouse Problem in video games

I'm having a bit of a problem with my mouse. Whenever I try to run games (Rainbow Six and Midtown Madness in particular), the windows mouse pointer is visible in the center of the screen. The pointer the game uses (like midtown madness has a section of a street that looks like an arrow) moves when I move the mouse (like it is supposed to), but the windows mouse pointers just stays in the center of the screen. If I minimize the window then maximize it, it goes away, but i'd hate to have to do that everytime i start a game. Any ideas? (any chance this is a directx problem?)

The specs on the system are-

CPU- 200MHz AMD K6
RAM- 64MB EDO (4 32MB sticks)
Video- SiS 6326
OS- Win98 SE

Any help anyone can provide would be most appreciated. Thanks.

Are you running in D3d or Open-GL?

Sounds like (in order of likelyhood): Vid drivers, DirectX, mouse drivers
Try updating them

Also, you say you have four 32mb EDO sticks.....but total 64mb. I assume you have two pairs of 32mb sticks totaling 64mb, correct? Just stating it for other readers...it's not really important.

I meant 4 16MB sticks (sorry). And I have the latest version of DirectX (DX 8), and just upgraded to the latest video drivers today (in hopes of it fixing the problem), but i still have the mouse pointer problem as well as all the colors are now weird (red where there should be black, blue blocks where clear things should be, weird stuff...). And the mouse is just a standard/generic serial mouse, and is just using the default Windows98 drivers.

try reverting back to dx7 or dx6, same drivers (or reference drivers if you can get them) maybe flashing the bios of video card or mobo?

maybe they've released a software patch for those 2 games when they found incompatibility such as what you have. Check those sites forums for updates.
