Mouse problem and ps/2 problems

Ok, not sure how to start this but here goes.
I have recently been having a problem with my mouse and the port. I am currently using Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer on USB, in win2k and linux. The problem I have is that if I move the mouse too fast it seems to go out of control, and it's movement becomes erratic.
This problem is especially visible with win98. In win98 if I try to move from one corner of the screen to another suddenly the mouse loses it's bearing and it's movement becomes erratic.
In linux I have not encoutered this as much, in win2k it seems to only happen if I increases the speed of the mouse to close to full, and in win98 it happens at relatively normal speeds.
I run at 1280*1024, Pentium II 350, 384mb ram. The PS/2 port on the mother board is almost useless. I know it is not my monitors refresh rate, and neither the mouse refresh rate. I cannot get a bios upgrade for my mother board because the company is no longer in business it seems. I cannot remember the name of it but if need be I can open up the case and find it.
My question is, that considering this seems to be a hardware problem of sorts, how can I fix it so that the mouse does not develop a mind of it's own because the erratic movement can be especially a pain in games.
Plus what confuses me is that the mouse also acts up in USB and PS/2. Anyone who could help me out please give me some ideas.
Thanks.

Well, aside from making sure the drivers are installed okay, you might try changing the surface you use the mouse on. The optical mice have trouble sometimes on shiny surfaces.

Well I have a black mouse bad. So I know that's not the problem. I tried it on different colored surfaces, same problem.
Plus it even happens with the proper software and drivers installed for the mouse.

Hmmm. I would suggest switching the mouse with one from a computer that you know is good if you haven't already. That will at least tell you if its the mouse itself or some other hardware/driver issue. The fact that is happens in different OS's means its probably a hardware or BIOS level problem. I've never had any first-hand problems with my own optical mouse, so these suggestions are just off the top of my head.

Hey, I got a Explorer mouse too and have the exact same problem. When I use it as USB, it turns off and on, and says "detected new hardware(mouse)" each time. It's very annoying. So I use the PS2 conversion, than it still locks up here and there. More you use it, more it locks. pisses me off.. Running Winxp here with the latest driver for the mouse, etc.

Pin the problem down!
Get/borrow a cheap MS mouse and try it. If it works OK then you know
it's a hardware problem. If it doesn't, then it may be software.
There is a 3rd option.......get a PS2 to 9 pin serial adapter and see how
it works on Com1...........Greg
