mouse pointer gone crazy, bad motherboard?

Having a strange problem with my new computer. Often when it boots up, the mouse pointer will start flickering all over the screen, opening windows and going crazy. I just have to let it tire itself out for about 30 seconds or so, and then everything is normal.

I'm having major issues with this computer, and i'm beginning to think maybe i have a bad motherboard. Other seemingly unrelated issues are that the USB ports won't recoginze devices unless I plug them in and then restart the computer. And also, I get a lot of random restarts and freezes. I've tried updating all my drivers and there are no hardware conflicts that i can see in device manager. I've also tried reinstalling windows.

I just built this computer. It has an MSI 865PE Neo2-P mobo and a chaintech volari v3 video card. Anyone have any ideas on this, does it sound like a bad motherboard?

Thanks.

If you put just XP on there plus Intel's 865G chipset drivers, and nothing else (not even the Volari drivers) what happens? Does this mouse/USB problem happen?

If you reboot in safe mode does the mouse pointer jump around?

Tried rebooting to safe mode a bunch of times, and I can't get the mouse pointer to go crazy. But the aggravating thing about this problem is it doesn't happen every time i reboot--probably about 1 out of 3 or so.

The USB problem dissapears in safe mode though. If I really need to reinstall XP and the chipset drivers to figure this out I will, but before i get to that point, any ideas i could try? I've already tried everything I could think of, so I'm open to suggestions here.

Thanks.

The easy way would be to take a spare hard drive and install just XP on it to see what happens. Another choice is to install XP to another directory on your current drive, like c:\winxp or similar.

The fact that you can't make it happen in safe mode is interesting. You might try booting normally then using MSCONFIG to disable all non-Microsoft services and all startup programs, and try rebooting to confirm the problem is no longer present. If it isn't, add services and programs half by half until you narrow down the offending program or service.

OK, I think I will try to install a clean copy of XP and see what happens. I may end up having to test each program/service as you suggested. I'm just really hoping it won't come to that, becuase i think that could take quite a while considering it doesn't happen on every boot. But I will try your first suggestion and go from there. Thanks.

Google this: MSI HQ FORUMS

I know my MSI mobo has a known issue with USB devices & will sometimes not give them power & such. You should try those forums & see if you can find an answer.
