Mouse pausing

Yesterday I decided I would play Ascendancy (an old DOS game) again on my Windows XP machine. The mouse didn't work very well at all, it was slow and it paused every few seconds, so I gave it up quickly.

When I got back to windows I noticed the speed was back but the pausing/freezing remained. So now my mouse freezes for a few seconds every 30 seconds or so. I tried switching my mouse from PS/2 to USB, made the problem worse. I tried installing new logitech mouseware, didn't have any effect.

Does anyone have any idea what I should do?

The mouse I use is a Logitech Dual Optical mouse with the latest mouseware on Windows XP Professional

try a system restore to the last functioning date. Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore->Next->Choose a date in bold on the calendar where the computer was last working properly->Next All the way through.

Tried, didn't work.
Then I tried hooking up an 8-year-old Microsoft mouse to the PC and it works like a charm.
Shame there aren't more buttons on there. Is my old mouse just busted?

Would have to think so if a different mouse works.

what kind of mouse do you have?? Regular or laser?
if it is regular then take the ball out and clean the inside of the mouse and see if that dosn't wrk.
