I'm running Win2000, and my mouse only shows up every other boot... when it doesn't, I have to restart and it shows up just fine... It detects it every time though, only the pointer doesn't show up. Any had this problem with Win2k or any OS?

Thanks,
Ian

This isn't gonna help you much, but on my parents' old Pentium 3 500MHz HP Pavilion, ever since they got the computer about 6 years ago, the mouse doesn't work about in 15% of startups.
This is on Win98 though, & they never wanted to try another mouse...so i never did get to prove anything either way.

I had a similar problem on a previous computer I built... whenever you would cold boot the system, it was pure chance whether or not the mouse would work or not. I finally booted the computer into a hard drive diagnostic utility (with mouse pointer support)... when the mouse wasn't working there, I knew it was not Windows and the problem was elsewhere. Long story short, I finally RMA'd the board and haven't had any problems since.

I've seen this before when I've had grounding issues with the motherboard. I had a system that I tried to move into a new case and it had grounding issues. It would boot, but the mouse might not be detected and/or the keyboard would lockup. I moved back to the old case and it fixed it. Has your system been like this since you got it or is this a new thing?

It's been like that since I built it a week ago, last Monday. The keyboard shows up fine though... but it's USB. I'm going to get a new Micrsoft Intellimouse Explorer, which is USB I think... or it can adapt via converter to USB... if the problem is the MB being ground, that should work because all of my USB ports work flawlessly. I think it's ground though... is there a way to verify whether or not the MB is infact grounded? I've got all 9 holes on standoffs and everything works fine... the mouse worked fine for maybe 6 years on the previous system. It's a Compaq mouse, maybe that's why, haha.

Keep the ideas coming!

The obvious quick test is to try a USB mouse. I suggest not installing any mouse-control software (just use basic WinXP/2k HID drivers) until you've got everything reliable and working.
