I recently installed an internal 56k PCI modem for a friend and made sure it was setup correctly before I left. I restarted several times and was confident all was fine.

I received a telephone call the next day to say that the mouse pointer was moving about on the screen but NOTHING happened when either of the buttons were pressed. My friend is concerned that she opened an email attachment that she shouldn't have and may have picked up a virus.

Have you ever heard of a virus affecting the mouse?

Any other ideas of what the problem could be if it's NOT a virus.

This is certainly a strange problem, one I have never come across before. Any ideas?

try running antivirus software.

if the keyboard still works... then you should be able to use tab button to move around.

and also check on the irq settings of the modem and mouse.
see if they are colliding at all.

if no virus and no prob with irq...
then reinstall the mouse driver.
and see what happens.

trust me... you can do all that without a mouse.

That's really strange that. My dad seems to have problems with his USB mouse when he tries to connect using and internal modem. The mouse either flashes like mad and becomes jerky, or it just disappears. I thought there was some form of virus, but it would seem not after running AV software.

I think it's a question of resources and perhaps IRQ sharing ect.....

Lemme know if you are able to find out the reason behind it.

I would have to second the IRQ allocation, but a virus scan is so easy to undertake, it wouldn't hurt
