Mouse not recognized, please help!

I'm working on a friend's computer. I haven't been able to get the mouse working at all. The system is a Pentium 100 Mhz (yuck!) on a VX board. I've gone through the BIOS and played around with the onboard serial 1 & 2 settings (enabled, disabled, etc). Still no mouse. Also, I know the modem is configured on Com 3 IRQ 5. Thing is, when I spoke with my friend earlier today, he told me his mouse was working perfectly on the computer. Anyone have any ideas?

Did you mess around with the insides of the comp?

Maybe you accidently unplugged the cable that goes to the port to the mobo

No, I even verified all cables, connectors, add-in cards etc... I work quite a bit with computers at home, mainly fixing & configuring systems for friends & relatives. I hate working with old SLOWWWWWW computers. I'll be handing the computer back to my friend, and hopefully HIS mouse will be able to work.

If you're trying to use a PS/2 mouse with a serial adapter, it won't work unless it is a combination serial-PS/2 mouse and includes the circuitry for both interfaces.
