I have this targus mini wireless optical guy for my laptop. I haven't used it in a few months, but I went and plugged it in today to find that it doesn't move up and down, no matter how I move the mouse. It just goes from left to right on the screen.

I've never heard of anything like this before...

thoughts?

(other mice work fine, and it's usb)

It sounds like the light sensor for vertical (up and down) movement has failed in the mouse. If it is still under warranty, I'd recommend getting a replacement.

Well if it's an optical, there is no seperate up/down and left/right sensor. There's one CCD camera sensor that detects movement in all directions.

If it only happens with that mouse, the mouse is bad.

*whine* but it didn't used to be bad....

is there anything that could cause it to go bad?

Dirt, scratches, component inside might have burned out... that's all I can think of that can cause an optical mouse to go bad. I have one that would randomly jump across the screen. It started doing it a few months after I de-soldered the red LED and changed it for a super-brigt blue LED, then re-soldered the red one back in, and then re-soldered another darker blue LED :D

Thank you for contacting Targus customer support.

It seems that the mouse is defective and needs to be replaced.

The replacement procedure is:

1) We would issue you an RA (Return Authorizations) via email.
2) You would have to ship the defective product back to our warehouse with a copy of this email. The email would include the details and shipping address for returning the product.
3) After receiving the defective product back at our warehouse, we would ship you the new replacement which could take up to 10 business days for you to receive.

hot. yay for warantee
