Mouse Lag on New System

I just built my first system and am having a weird problem with the mouse. It will normally work fine, but every now and again (while playing games mostly) it will start to lag behind my movements by a second or so. Normally if I stop moving it, it will catch back up and then work fine for a bit.

The system specs are:
ASUS ATI A86-MVP Motherboard
AMD Athalon 4000+ processor
2 GB Ram (1GB sticks)
ATI Radeon 1600 512MB video card
WD 160GB HD
Sony DRU810 DVD-RW
Displaying on a 19" DVI Gateway LCD monitor

It is almost like the system gets bogged down and it shows up as mouse slowdown to me.

The only major software I am running is:
I-Tunes
Quicken
Norton Systemworks
Games

Any help appreciated!
Thanks,
RJ

Welcome to the Tech Support forum and Anandtech forums at large :)

What kind of mouse do you have djran2002? I've seen cordless mice lag due to poor batteries. Is it PS/2 or USB? I might not get a chance to post back in here, but you may want to add these tidbits to your thread. The more info you supply, the better your chances of receiving a response which helps.

Just for kicks, you might want to make sure you have the latest software installed for your pointing device as well.

If you are Alt-Tabbing to desktop while running a game, there is really no guarantee you will have 100% mouse response time unless you go back into the game and exit. This is theory of course, because we all know that multi-tasking should not be a problem. But with all the different games out there, you never really know if you are coming across a game-specific issue or not unless you check the software manufacturer's site. Hope this info helps, best of luck.

It happens with both a USB mouse and Bluetooth mouse (same effect with either piece of equipment).

I will get the slowdown after fresh boots (if I move the mouse around the screen over icons really fast it will slow down after a bit). Also during apps it will start to lag, then if I pause and don't mopve it, it catches up and works for a while.

I was able to watch the CPU usage during one episode (had task manager open) and I was getting like 99% CPU utilization on my norton software during the lag time. I disabled auto protect and antivirus to see if that got rid of the problem, but it still persisted...
