Mouse/KB for next-gen consoles?

We all know that weird little optional mice and stuff have existed for consoles for ages (anyone remember Mario Paint?!), but it's hard to support that kind of thing with much support.

What if the next Xbox and PS products came with stock USB KB/Mouse support? It would open the door to a lot of new gaming types that haven't really been very feasible on consoles up to now, such as RTS games like StarCraft II, and much more competitive FPS play.

The downside would be that even average FPS players with a KB/Mouse would give the folks used to handheld controllers fits in the games.

As a bonus, it would make browsing web sites and Netflix/etc a lot smoother as well. I've used the Netflix app on my 360, but it feels really clunky compared to browsing on the PC with a mouse.

They had the capability this gen with standard USB ports, and they didn't. Ps3 did for very few games at least.

I don't think anything has happened to change their mind about it since.

Hardly anyone could use a kb/mouse comfortably while sitting on their couch. Consoles aren't intended for that type of control. Some of you might say you play your console games at a desk, but you're in the extreme minority.

I don't think it would displace the handheld controller as the console default, but rather offer more flexibility to consoles so that things like MMOs, RTS, and FPS are better/more playable.

A handheld controller is just crucial for fighting, sports, racing, etc.

Think of it like the Kinect, it doesn't mean that people will stop using their regular controllers, it just opens more doors.

This.

And KB+Mouse = too much clutter for a console gaming, what with all the remote, wireless, sensors thingies already around.

Trackball would be the preferred input device while sitting on a couch.

I've used a trackball to play games on my laptop while lying in bed. It's better than using the touchpad.

I think a kb with an integrated trackball would do it. I have vague memories of seeing one in a store a few years ago, so I think they already exist.

I play half of my PC games on the couch 🙂 I have a wireless kb/mouse that I toss on the lift-up coffee table in front of me. It's nice playing on a giant tv, but 1080p feels like a step back in some ways.

This question often arises and the is no indication it will ever happen. Fps games really do suck with handheld controllers though.

I don't know why they didn't come out with a cheap keyboard mouse controller long time ago, especially for RTS and shooters. I had this idea a long time ago, they came out with a guitar controller but no keyboard/mouse. You wouldn't even need a full keyboard, just the left hand buttons.
