So the X-axis of my mouse (Genius NetScroll+) just died. I don't know much about mice, and with all these options around I'm not sure what to buy.

I don't need anything fancy, 3 buttons plus a scroll wheel is plenty. I mostly game, so low latency is key. Other than that, wires don't bother me much, and with my brother using a wireless right next to my comp, I'm not sure if I'd be able to use a wireless one at all. (I tried it once, but whenever my bro moved his mouse mine ceased to function). I don't mind cleaning the rollers every now and then either. However, it should be cheap as I'm saving for other stuff.

Bottom line: what is the cheapest gaming mouse that will last me several years?

These days any decent mouse does not come cheap
however ive found after using several diffrent mouses that the
logitech mx310 is a great overall mouse and pretty neat for gaming.

But first off even if you order it online I would recommend you drop
by your local electronics store and check out the mouses, see how the feels,
I think confort in your hands is the key.

Definitely optical. When mouse get sticky balls, mouse gets cranky.

Wired/wireless, your preference. If you have other wireless devices in the same room (don't remember which ones interfere on that band) might want to go wired.

DOH! CARSON PALMER DOWN!

I vaguely recall reading somewhere that optical mice have higher latency than balled... could be wrong though, am I? However, I do know that they sometimes have a hard time moving on very smooth surfaces. And like I said, I have no problem with cleaning my mouse every now and then, I've got quite the routine... :)

As for the MX130, I don't know if I'll need the side buttons. The 300 doen't have them, is it as good as the 310 in the more important areas?

I'm really unwilling to throw out $50 on a mouse. Even the MX300 is a bit above what I would consider a fair price and that only costs half as much.

its not 50...well the 510 no longer seems to be really sold i guess. there were sales on the thing for 20-25ish last couple months. 518 is 30 at newegg:p so not 50 bucks. g5-g7 are 50+ top model these days. mouse isn't wasted money, what do u use all the time after all.

Well it may not be $50 there, but over here mice are ridiculously overpriced.

Though I'll gladly pay up if it means that it's going to last 3+ years.
