I have one of those Microsoft red IntelliMouse Explorer mice. It's roughly 1.5 years old.

In the past week, every 30 minutes or so, it simply stopped working for 5-10seconds. When I turned it over, none of those red laser(or whatever it is) lights worked.

Today things got worse. It didnt work for half of the time... After some period of not working the lights started flickering and it started working again for a few seconds.

After a few hours of this I got a "USB device not recognized" message from Windows.

When I go to the Microsoft Mouse program that came with the drivers, to the Hardware tab, it shows no installed devices.

I tried plugging the mouse to the second USB port, but that didnt work at all.
Currently it's totally dead, but one in a while the lights turn on for a second or two.

How do I figure out whether it's a problem with the mouse or the USB? And how do I fix it?

Why not just RMA it to Microsoft for a replacement,I believe they have lifetime warranty on their mice.

The same exact thing happened to me too. Does your windows make a wierd error sound everytime the mouse turns off? I think I'm going to RMA it. Right now switched to my other mouse, logitech optical whatever and it works fine. I'm almost positive it was the mouse. Well if I were you, I would just call up microsoft and send it back. That's what I'm going to probably do tomorrow.
