Mouse goes crazy in Slackware 8.1

Hey you guys...I just installed Slackware 8.1 and I have it all set up..the only thing I can't do is get my mouse to work.. It works just fine until I load up KDE, then it will spazz out about any movement and start randomly clicking. I don't know how to fix it, I have tried basically every setting in mouseconfig and xf86config to get it to work but to no avail..

I'm stumped on this one..

If its any help I have a Logitech dual optical running on the ps/2 port through a KVM switch..

thanks for any help

Anyone, please🙂 It would be really nice to get the mouse working in XFree86.. although it is usable without it..

drag - I am using a Logitech dual optical mouse and I have tried every driver there is for it.. unless Im missing something.

bingbong - yeah, i was using gpm, but I have also tried with that on and off.. neither worked 🙁

This may sound stupid, but I use a optical mouse and often I get a cat hair or something caught up into the optics... This can make it jump around, but that probably won't help.

My mouse is also usb.... here is a copy of my config.

Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
Option "Buttons" "5"

maybe that can help you

I tried what you said, but it still does not work right.. I'm pretty sure its not the mouse because, as I said in my first post..I have it connected to a KVM and use it for my Windows machine as well..

I know I had it working just fine in RedHat, but I can't figure out how to do it in Slackware.

Wow..that made lots of wierd crap show up on the screen when I moved the mouse..it also makes funny crap when I type on the keyboard😕

Did it make funny crap come up when you *weren't* moving the mouse?

maybe the dual optics is screwing things up... Maybe you can cover up one side with tape? I am getting desperate...... 🙁

🙂 well, thanks for the advice anyway..even if you couldnt think of anything good😉 not that i could think of anything better

edit* BTW: the mouse works just fine until i start up X.. when im just in the console it tracks with the little white square perfectly..

What you describe usually happens when you select the wrong protocol for the mouse.

Try changing the protocol to "PS/2" in the mouse section, if that's what's selected, you can also try "Auto", though "PS/2" should work fine, in fact that's what I've found to work best in most cases.

Well, never mind.. I had a friend look at it and he couldn't get it to work..so instead, I just installed Red Hat because it sets the mouse up right from the beginning🙂

I know it's the easy way out..but I will try again in the future..when I know more about what I am doing😀

I don't know if it's any help/consolation, but my mouse does that same thing in Slack 8.1 if I start the Linux machine while it's not selected on the KVM. When X starts it has to be the active machine or you'll have to kill your X session when you switch over. So long as it's selected when X starts though you can switch to and from the machine as much as you want and it will never mess up. Strange . . .

Thank you for your help on this matter too, alas..I have already formatted and installed Red Hat 7.3..which also does not have the problem with the KVM that you are describing..😕 Don't know if it's just a Slackware thing🙂

The next time I install Slackware, though, I will make sure that the Linux box is selected on my KVM while it is starting up🙂 Just to make sure😉
