Mouse freezes

One of our computers is having some very strange issues. The mouse constantly freezes up on it. We have checked everything possible. It is practically a brand new system. There is a new motherboard (Asus A8N32-SLI Deluxe). The memory, CPU and video cards have all been tested on their own and are all working fine. This computer is not used on the Internet and it is seperate from our network so it is very unlikely that it would have a virus.

Here is what is happening:

If you leave the computer sit for 3-4 minutes then the mouse will move freely for about 30 seconds. Then it will freeze for about 20 seconds then move for a few more before it completely freezes again. Then if you let it sit for 3-4 minutes again, it will do the same thing all over again.

If anyone has any suggestions we would really appreciate it.

Maybe try the mouse on another computer to isolate if it is a problem with the mouse or the computer? (Alternatively you could try a different mouse on the computer with the problem). Also try different ports.

That was actually one of the first things we tried. We have tried multiple keyboards and mice on this computer as well as other computers. We have also tried different kinds of keyboards and mice (USB and PS/2). The problem still remains either way. We have tried many different ways to no avail.

Anything you notice during the freezes in terms of system activity? Extremely high CPU usage? Hard drive thrashing?

Try to clear the CMOS. Sometimes the saved bios settings can get corrupted and cause the USB ports to act up. Often clearing the CMOS will fix that issue.

You could try removing and re-installing the mouse driver. In Control Panel ... System ... Hardware ... Device Manager, find the mouse, right-click, and delete the device. Close that up, shut down the system, disconnect the mouse and reboot so the machine revises its registry to run with no mouse at all. Once back in Windows and using keyboard controls, shut down, plug the mouse back in and reboot again. As it reboots, Windows should discover the mouse, then find and install its driver.

That may not be the problem, but it's a simple thing to try. However, if the driver itself on your hard disk is corrupted somehow, you might need to replace it with a fresh copy from your install disk, then update in case there's a newer one.

We just reinstalled the system. Guess what! Still not working right. We got the card mfg to replace card. When you think of it it seems when mouse is moved the screen has to refresh. The mfg thinks it is most likely the memory. I agree. After we replace the card all that is left to replace is me. So I hope this works.

You didn't try resetting the BIOS? Updating the BIOS?

You should check if the system freezes or the mouse. Play a video and take note of any freezes. Does it freeze when you don't move the mouse? Does it only freeze when you do? Does it not freeze at all?
