Mouse freezes and screen shuts off randomly...WTF?

This has happened about three times in the past three days... The most recent time, the mouse froze for about 10 seconds while the TV player application was open (I have an AIW Radeon 9700 pro), then the screen went black like it was receiving no signal. It had the signal check thing on it and definitely was not displaying an image from the video card... the sound was still going on my speakers and the computer was on. It did not reboot or anything. Do you think this could be a video card problem? Has ANYONE had a problem like this before? It seems to be pretty unique... any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys!
