Specs:
Asus Z87 Pro BIOS 1007
I4770K
16G Corsair ddr1600
VisionTek 7970 Video
Antec 750W PS
MS ComfortMouse 6000
Win7 Pro 64 bit with updates applied
Not overclocked or tweaked.

The Problem:
At some random point after a few cycles of being asleep/waking up, the cursor will just freeze and do nothing. So far it's mostly been while browsing, and you can use the arrow keys to move about the page. A reboot will bring it back, but a couple of days later it craps out again.Windows shows nothing in the error logs.

Things I've tried:
Setting USB Legacy to on in the BIOS, upgraded cats from 13.1 to 13.4, tried different USB ports, tried a different mouse driver, and turned off the USB "go to Sleep" function in Windows. I've even tried unplugging and the plugging the mouse back in when it happens. I really need to get this solved quickly, because my 30 day return window at Microcenter is up on July 3 (if it is the board).

Update: read through the event viewer and found out that the "driver" for my Kindle was/is failing to load. I always keep it plugged into the USB port when it's not being used. I may have to rethink that now. Funny how it never did that on the old rig.

Update 2:

Unplugged Kindle and it still does it. Now the 212 code points to an ACPI device. I tried installing a different mouse driver (Intellipoint 8.1 IIRC). I also reinstalled the Intel USB 3.0 driver, and now the Intel Chipset Driver. Will see what happens.

Did you have a mouse driver installed that isn't the stock Windows one?

memtest86+, prime95, chkdsk /r?

As denis280 pointed out, try a different mouse. Since you are installing Intellipoint software, I assume this is a Microsoft mouse?

If it's a wired keyboard, have you tried pressing Caps Lock to see whether the caps lock light comes on (when this freezing occurs)?

I've tried the stock mouse driver (MS comfortmouse 6000), the "Mouse and keyboard center software" from Windows update, and now the Intellipoint software. The Keyboard is a generic PS/2 unit that still functions after the mouse dies. I ran Memtest right after the rig was up and running and the memory checks out OK.

The keyboard carries on just fine. All keys function. I have to use the keyboard to reboot.

Oops, I hadn't read the problem properly. I guess you should try a different mouse :)

Though out of curiosity, I'd try (during a pointer freeze), using the keyboard to get over to Device Manager, disable/enable the mouse.

On re-reading the problem, I have another question. Does this problem only occur after the computer has slept/resumed a few times, or does it ever happen after a cold boot without sleeping?

I'm wondering about the USB selective suspend setting in CP > Power Options > Balanced.

I've disabled the "USB go to sleep" function in the Windows power management. I rolled back the BIOS to 0801, so I'll see if that changes anything. I would try another mouse, but I don't have one on hand. That will be the next thing to do.

Update: Reinstalled Win 7 and all seems well for the past 10 days. So evidently something got borked during the inital install.
