Mouse cursor freezing in Vista

Hi guys,

The problem I'm having is after installing Vista and updating the video card drivers for the 8800GT the mouse cursor freezes/disappears. Its still working but I just can't see it. The only work around I know is to either restart (and let it happen over and over) or enabled annoying mouse trails which doesnt work too well in some games.

I've googled this problem but haven't found any real solutions. Does anyone know a fix for this. SP1 has been installed and still same issues. However I do think its a video card drive issue as it works fine until I install the drivers. I've tried 169.04, 169.25, 169.28 to no luck.

I'm using the Logitech MX3200 combo with the MX600 mouse with latest vista drivers. No other software has been installed. Thanks for any suggestions.

Uninstall SetPoint - this should solve it.

(I used to have problems with Logitech SetPoint in XP - it would exhibit as the Hard Drive controller error in the Event Viewer!)

If it is resolved, try the latest SetPoint 4.4 released January 2008. It seems to work fine for me.

Hope this helps.

It happens without setpoint being installed. I only tried setpoint to see if it was a mouse driver issue. Any other ideas? Quite a shame because I quite like the looks of vista desktop but I can't use it liek this.

Don't panic - it is just a matter of proper settings and drivers.

169.25 is the nVidia Graphics driver on my system. And check if you are getting the full x16 PCIe mode. And check your BIOS settings for Vista - just reviewed the Gigabyte BIOS settings, and there are some Vista-specific settings there.

And if you are overclocking anything, especially your Video Card, bring everything back down to default values - you will re-validate it later.

And check your memory settings (voltage/frequency/timings 2T CR) - Vista is very sensitive, much more so than the XP.

Good luck!

Edit: Have you seen this in your BIOS...? Have no idea what it does, came across this by accident...

"HPET Support (Note)
Enables or disables High Precision Event Timer (HPET) for Windows® Vista® operating system.
(Default: Enabled)
HPET Mode (Note)
Allows you to select the HPET mode for your Windows® Vista® operating system. Select 32-bit
mode when you install 32-bit Windows® Vista® ; select 64-bit mode when you install 64-bit Windows®
Vista®. (Default: 32-bit mode) "

Thanks for your help btw.

Videocard hasn't been overclocked. Cpu was overclocked when installing Vista but I had set it back to default and still the same problem. HPET was enabled and default to 32bit. Memory timings I never play around with it so would be on default settings based on the SPD table.

Any other ideas including previous videocard drivers? I can't seem to find the link for older forceware drivers on the nvidia website so not sure what versions to look for. Reason why I'm leaning towards videocard drivers because this only happens if I install them. Everthing (except for the videocard) works fine so long as I don't install them. I've also tried to plug the keyboard and mouse dongle into another USB port to no luck and also tried a USB microsoft intellimouse to no luck. Don't have any others lying around to play with but I've looked on google and people still have no luck trying PS/2 mice.

Guess I should go back to XP until Vista drivers are more stable aye. If only I had a spare video card laying around to test out just to make sure its not an issue with the 8800.

I think your problem is with the memory being set to Auto. Never trust SPD - the timings are usually relaxed so you can boot with 1.8V.

Set the voltage to the one recommended by the manufacturer, you can raise it by 0.1V if necessary.

Set the timings manually, ex. 5-5-5-15 2T. And set the frequency - again, manually - to 800MHz.

All the drivers are stable enough, especially for the Vista x86.

Don't worry, you might get frustrated initially, but remeber that you can ALWAYS go back to XP.

I was very hesitant with my Ultimate x64, and got it to actually try it out.

I haven't gone back to my XP since early January, and it would take a major disaster for me to switch back to XP.

Again - be patient, read the forum messages, and you WILL be fine.

EDIT: And look for the NVidia patches like the ones mentioned here:

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=42820

And you MUST update your DirecX 9.0 - people forget to do that in Vista.

Well I reinstalled vista. So far so good. Things I did difference, updated bios to F9 and put all bios settings to default. Completely installed the driver CD that came with the motherboard. Didn't realise that it never finished installed after the first reboot the first couple times round. Memory setting is still on Auto atm. Using 169.25 video drivers . Fingers crossed because this is the most stable the mouse has been since. Thanks for you help.
