you kids!
i suppose you've never knocked on a door....
take you knuckle and rap on the dry wall continuously, while moving from left to right (or right to left!). when you are over the drywall only, you will hear a low pitched drum like sound..when you are over a stud, the pitch will become higher, and less resonant.
rap quickly, and move your knuckle about .5 inches laterally each time you do this.
it will be obvious when you are over a stud.
the stud is about 2 inches in width...with careful rapping, you should be able to determine the approximate center of each stud (the sound transitions at each side of the stud. studs will be 16 inches apart (centered)
pre-drill the hole for the screw. use an apppropriate wood screw.
this will be your strongest wall mount.
if the stud locations are not the same as your wall mount, you may need to mount a flat piece of wood to the studs, and then mount your wall mount to the wood.
if you chose to mount to the dry wall, you must get appropriate dry wall toggle bolts or mollys..ask you hardware salesperson for advice (based on the weight of the item you are mounting to the wall).
if this baby cost big money..i would mount to the studs (plan on needing a piece of wood as outlined above)
