I bought a couple sets of the Monoprice in-ceiling speakers for surrounds in my basement, which is currently unfinished. The installation instructions assume you already have drywall up, so I'm wondering if there's an easier way to install them now before that? I'd like to save myself the hassle of locating the joists and exactly where I ran the speaker wire after drywall goes up.

I was also wondering if anyone has built a box around their in-ceiling speakers? I'm considering it, but I'm not entirely sure what material to use or how big to make it.

That's one of the problems with in ceiling. If you don't have a "rough in" kit then you are kinda screwed. It's hard to do a really good job with a backer box because you'll still have an air gap between the bottom of the box and the drywall.

If you do go the route of the box, then use 3/4" MDF and line it with this:

It will help tone down resonance and cut down on the transmission to the floors above.
