Mounting IDE drives vertical ?

okay I might get myself a Directron SF-201-B case, BUT it has a vertical drivebay (drives sitting on their sides)

I just wanted to know, doesnt this affect the lifespan of the drive ? (because I can imagine the drive arm engine has to work harder when it has to beat gravity, and how should I mount it then, with arm down so it fals down when shut down or with arm up ?

thanks for any help or advice ...

The drive couldn't care less if it is horizontal or vertical. Many Dell and Gateway computers (and others) have their drives mounted vertically.

Just don't shake the drive while it's running! lol

I was stupid enough not to mount my drives so therefore, experienced problems later. Good thing I was able to return some of them and have them still under the 3 year warranty!

By the way, nice case! black and blue led!

As long as you keep the drives mounted as they are, it should be no problem. Don't mount a drive vertically for a year, and then decide ot switch it. I heard that can cause problems...

That hasn't been true for 10 years or so. The bottom platter of the drive has head positioning information built into it - the heads sync to those tracks so changing the orientation doesn't matter.

My first computer, Compaq Presario, had a Quantum 3.8gb mounted vertically, still running strong no bad sectors after 5 years! So i guess it doesn't matter...my friend always switches hd's with his case open he has his hard drives just hanging, that's not good but he never had a hd die on him yet....keyword yet lol
