I just posted a topic on my heatsink and fan, however, my motherboard does NOT have mounting holes for that Thermalright SLK947U Heatsink. But, around the processor socket, there are diagrams and measurements around it. I was wondering if that meant that you could drill there and make the holes, I know its a stupid question, but I would REALLY like to have that heatsink.

P.S.>The motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-7VT600-L for those who need to know that.

I don't think drilling into your mobo without knowing it's okay is a good idea. I'd contact support on this one, to see if it's possible.

I looked on Gigabyte's site for a pic of the board, and I didnt see any markings that might be for holes, but maybe I just couldnt see any...

If they arent there..well, they arent, and only thing you can do is either buy a clip on heatsink (SLK900A perhaps) or get a new mobo that for sure has mounting holes. I'd strongly advise against drilling the holes yourself unless you screw up the board some other way ;) :p

If the holes aren't there, drilling them will either grind components off, or else sever many traces, not all of which are on the outer layers. PCB's are multi-layered now, so there are likely to be traces beneath the surface, which would be destroyed. As a rule, don't put any holes into any hardware that you value.

You need the slk900a. Gigabyte doesn't have holes to support those hs units. I got mostly gigabyte boards, same situ.

You are better off drilling holes in your head - though it will probably violate your warranty too.

There may be diagrams and such on the board because the may have thought about making the holes at one point, but in the end decided not to. Just like some mobos have the space for the IDE raid, but never put in the actual hardware on the non-raid version.
