Mounting hard disks vertically

I've heard from various people that its bad for the hard disk to mount it vertically. I can imagine some reasons why, including the read head having to move up and down instead of moving from side to side...

But, considering that there are plenty of vertical hard disk enclosures and that my computer case comes with vertical hard disk mounts... it can't really be that bad right?

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

No, there is no problem with it... I've done it several times on previous cases...

It's perfectly fine. Older disks had problems when you moved them from horizontal to vertical (or vice versa) and required you to format them if you changed the orientation.

No problem - the same question gets asked about every month here - many external drive housings are vertical.
