Are there any guides out there on how to do it? I'm wondering if you just spread the thermal paste over the chip evenly or if you should spread it in specific areas like the C2D chip. It's been 3 years since I've done it. Also, is 3YO Arctic Silver any good?

HSF mounts the same as it does on the 1156 processors. How to apply TIM depends on the material being used and the HSF you're using. Some are better when spread thinly over the entire top of the CPU, others are better with just a little bead applied to the center, while still others perform better when applied in lines.

Your old AS MIGHT still be good...or not. You'll have to squirt some out to see. It may have separated in the tube, it may have dried out, or it might be just as good as it was the day you bought it.

Thanks!

I looked at the AS3 and it looked fine. I mounted the HSF with the AS3 and I'm getting very high temps. They are about 68C. I've tried remounting and reapplying but the temps are still high. Not sure what is wrong.

If it's actually AS3 and not 5, I would replace it. It was discontinued around 2002. Even if you bought it 3 years ago, it was old stock by then. It's probably separated and well past the point of saving. Even generic TIM from radio shack will probably perform better.

God point. I didn't catch that it was AS3. There are DEFINITELY better TIM products.
Personally, I like Shin Etsu best, but used the supplied Noctua TIM with the new build. It gets a very high rating in the [H] TIM comparison.

Thanks guys!

I didn't realize it was that old. My temps are really high. That must be the reason. I'll get some new paste and reapply.
