I am a touring cyclist, I don't know much about picking a mountain bike.

Have you checked out Giant and Specialized mountain bikes? I know they both have extensive lines.

How much can you get that 8500 for? I'm assuming it's used... if it's in great shape then go for it.

Wow, what kind of biking are you planning on doing? That is a very large budget for a mountain bike. Specialized Hardrock comps are a lot less than that. I've got a nice Giant Boulder that was well within your budget and is great for off-roading, just not for huge jumps or anything like that.

what kind of riding will you be doing?

cross-country? downhill? everything?

drops? jumps?

commuting at all? do you ride technical trails? like to push yourself?

current bike? where do you ride?

there are so many different bikes for so many different jobs you need to know what type of riding you will be doing.

currently, no bike at all. I will be pretty much attempting everything. No jumps or anything like that. Just "regular" mountain biking for the average guy who is in shape
